JPD Traffic Stop Leads to Narcotic Arrest with LPSO

On Wednesday, January 26, 2022, a Jena Police Officer stopped a vehicle on Highway 84 for an equipment violation. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Newt Ashley, 31, of Jena. An LPSO K-9 deputy responded to assist with the stop, and while speaking with Ashley a strong odor commonly associated with marijuana was emitting from the vehicle.

K-9 “Max” was utilized to search the vehicle, and yielded a positive alert. A hand search was conducted with deputies locating a baggie of suspected methamphetamine, along with a bottle of codeine, and THC vaping items. Ashley was searched, and 4 hand rolled cigarettes containing suspected marijuana were found in his pocket.

Ashley was arrested and transported to the LPSO Jail for booking. Inside the jail deputies found him to be in possession of a THC vape pen. LaSalle Parish Sheriff’s Office booked Ashley on charges of expired MVI, possession of CDS I marijuana, possession of CDS II methamphetamine, possession of CDS II codeine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and introduction of contraband in a correctional facility.
